Mid Winter Herping in Missouri

Due to the warm temps today Ryan and I decided to do a little mid winter herping in St Charles Co. First we herped an area that we knew many snakes used for hibernacula and then we stopped by a vernal pool used buy Ringed Salamanders in the fall and found a few larva. Total species are listed below:

Northern Water Snake - Nerodia sipedon sipedon, 3
Eastern Garter Snake - Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis, 5
Western Ribbon Snake - Thamnophis proximus proximus, 1
Ringed Salamander - Ambastoma annulatum (larva), 5
Blanchard's Cricket Frog - Acris crepitans blanchardi, 2
Northern Spring Peeper - Pseudacris crucifer crucifer, many
Southern Lepard Frog - Rana sphenocephalia, 1

All in all, not a bad day for January.
